Wortley Men’s Club Wins Barnsley CAMRA Club of the Year 2025

For an incredible 13th consecutive year, Wortley Men’s Club has been crowned Barnsley CAMRA Club of the Year! Nestled in the picturesque village of Wortley, this award-winning club continues to set the standard for community-focused hospitality, real ale excellence, and first-class service.

A Proud Legacy and Rich History

Wortley Men’s Club has long been a cornerstone of the local community, with its roots stretching back to the Second World War, when it was established to serve the residents of Wortley and surrounding areas. Originally a gathering place offering support and camaraderie during difficult times, the club has grown into a thriving, independent institution with approximately 700 members, around 200 of whom are regular patrons. Despite its success, the club remains true to its founding principles, providing a warm and welcoming space for all.

Notably, Wortley Men’s Club has a history of success on the national stage, having previously been crowned CAMRA National Club of the Year in 2015—a testament to its enduring quality and reputation.

Championing Real Ale and Local Breweries

A key part of Wortley Men’s Club’s continued success is its dedication to championing real ale and supporting local breweries. As a fully independent club, it has no brewery ties, allowing it to curate a diverse and ever-changing selection of four cask ales, sourced from some of Yorkshire’s finest independent brewers. This commitment to real ale excellence has been upheld by the hardwork of the Committee who have played a pivotal role in the club’s success. Teressa Pickering, along with Pam Jones as stewardess’, have continued to build on the club’s reputation for outstanding cellar standards and customer service. Though Nigel Pickering has recently retired, the Pickering family remains heavily involved, ensuring that the club maintains its high standards and commitment to the local beer community.

Fundraising and the Annual Wortley Beer Festival

Beyond its reputation for great beer, Wortley Men’s Club is equally committed to fundraising and supporting the local community. Throughout the year, the club hosts charity events, raffles, and community initiatives, ensuring it gives back to the people who support it.

The annual Wortley Beer Festival, held at the start of July, is a standout event in the club’s calendar. This celebration of real ale, cider, music, and food attracts visitors from near and far, providing a fantastic experience while also raising significant funds for local charities. The festival has become one of the most popular beer events in the region, reinforcing the club’s role as a social and cultural hub.

Presentation Evening and Regional Competition

To celebrate this fantastic achievement, Barnsley CAMRA will be hosting a special presentation evening at Wortley Men’s Club, with the date to be confirmed. This event will be a great opportunity for members, staff, and supporters to gather and toast to another successful year.

With this latest accolade, Wortley Men’s Club now advances to the regional round of the competition, and Barnsley CAMRA wishes them the very best of luck.

Congratulations once again to everyone at Wortley Men’s Club for this well-earned recognition!
